Perfect your Academic/Scientific Writing

This workshop focuses on perfecting your scientific writing in English – from syntax to structure (and everything in between). Beyond this, this class sets out the essential generic expectations in Anglophone world for journal articles, books, seminar papers and public lectures. Techniques for organising ideas, editing, self-reflection, and responding to reviewers’ feedback are workshopped, as are the mechanics of grammar, syntax, register and tone, which prove essential in scientific writing. During the two days of the workshop, we will work intensively on texts you are currently composing, and not only will you receive 1:1 feedback on the specifics of your text, but the course leader will also assist you in preparing the final text for submission to publishers.

I am an author and academic, who has taught Literature, Academic Writing, and English Language in the Austria, the UK, Singapore, and Hungary. I have a BA, MA and PhD in English from the University of London, where I also completed my teacher-training. Although I have published a monograph and numerous academic articles, my current passion is creative writing. My first novel, Inside Virgil Caine, is being published later this year, while my poetry has been published by Broken Sleep Books. Sceptical about the efficacy of the one-size-fits-all approach of many Academic Writing departments, I wholeheartedly endorse LcL’s tailored approach towards language tuition: all of my academic writing courses are based on my 10+ years of experience of being a research-active academic and tailored to the needs of my individual students.

For me, teaching writing – regardless of whether it’s critical or creative writing – is about empowering others to formulate and communicate their ideas with absolute clarity and confidence. And there are few things more rewarding than enabling brilliant minds to share their ideas with the world.

What you will learn in this workshop

How to formulate your ideas with absolute clarity
How to use syntax, grammar, register, tone and literary devices to ensure an objective, academic style that engages (rather than alienates) the reader
How to employ the latest, research-backed editorial and compositional techniques
How to recognise and employ scientific register in contrast to idiomatic language.
